Genital surgery

Reconstructive genital surgery can help patients with stress urinary incontinence. It can also be used to repair the sinking of the vaginal wall (prolapse) or bulging that occurs when the bladder or urethra drop into the vagina.

Aesthetic surgery of the female genitalia, or ‘designer vaginas’, includes a number of surgical procedures designed to improve their appearance. It is claimed that, occasionally, sexual function may be enhanced. The availability of such surgery in Finland is limited.

Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a brief surgical procedure in which the cervix is dilated and a special instrument is used to scrape the uterine lining. You may need a D&C for one of several reasons. It’s done to remove tissue in the uterus during or after a miscarriage or abortion or to remove small pieces of placenta after childbirth. This helps prevent infection or heavy bleeding. A D&C may also help diagnose or treat growths such as fibroids, polyps, or endometriosis, hormonal imbalances, or uterine cancer. Vacuum or suction aspiration uses aspiration to remove uterine contents through the cervix.

Genital surgery procedures may be done while you are under general, local or spinal anesthesia.
